It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Julie Ann Klootwyk, who left us on November 24, 2024. Julie’s life was a remarkable journey of resilience, strength, and unwavering positivity in the face of adversity. For many years, she bravely battled cancer and confronted emotional challenges, yet she never let those struggles define her. Instead, she radiated warmth and hope, always focusing on the brighter side of life to ensure her loved ones wouldn’t worry about her.
Born in Corydon, Iowa, on March 21, 1959, Julie was the youngest of four children, deeply loved by her parents, Jack W. Grismore and Irene Ann Grismore (Hunt). Her siblings—Nancy and Marty Kimble, Diana and Tim Stehman, and Brad and Susie Grismore—held a special place in their hearts for their baby sister. They shared countless cherished memories growing up together, filled with laughter, love, and a strong sense of family. The bonds they created during those formative years only deepened over time, and the joy of their reunions whenever they had the opportunity to visit one another was a source of great happiness for Julie.
After graduating from Ankeny High School in 1977, Julie made her home in Ankeny, Iowa, where she raised her family and built lasting connections. She loved the different seasons of Iowa, finding beauty and joy in the vibrant colors of spring blossoms and the stunning hues of autumn leaves. This deep appreciation for nature’s cycles kept her rooted in her beloved state.
Julie was a loving mother to her three children: Benjamin, who shares his life with his wife Gina; Lacey, accompanied by her Fiancé Joe, and Ryan. Her granddaughters, Madison and Olivia Heston, along with her cherished Great-Grandson, Kingston Heston, were her greatest joys. She poured her heart into creating beautiful memories with them, from peaceful fishing trips to joyful arts and crafts and imaginative dress-up adventures. She was over-the-moon about the announcement of another Great Grandchild due May 2025.
In her final months, Julie's beloved daughter Lacey was by her side, providing the love and support she needed the most. The time they spent together brought them closer, and Lacey became a pillar of strength for her mother. Julie cherished the opportunity to share her last moments with Lacey, exchanging heartfelt stories and laughter that Lacey will always remember with deep fondness. During those days, Julie also enjoyed long phone conversations with her son Ben, reminiscing about cherished memories, as if she was trying to make up for lost time.
One of Julie’s most cherished traditions was making birthdays truly special for her children. She created unforgettable celebrations filled with homemade cakes adorned with cool whip, marshmallow cream frosting, and candy bars, along with fun activities shared with friends. These moments of joy and love left lasting memories that her family will always treasure.
Thoughtful and kind, Julie often surprised friends and family with heartfelt gifts and handwritten notes, bringing joy to their days. Her ability to find happiness in the little things made her a truly special person, and she was always grateful for every gesture, no matter how small.
Throughout her life, Julie found solace and strength in the outdoors. She enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, and bike riding, seeking beauty in every moment. Reiman Butterfly Gardens held a special place in her heart, where she found peace and wonder, sharing that magical experience with her grandchildren.
In the kitchen, Julie was a true artist. She crafted delicious meals from scratch without ever needing a recipe, filling her home with the warmth of home-cooked goodness. Her homemade beef jerky was a family favorite, and she delighted in finding inspiration on the Cooking Channel, always eager to share her culinary creations.
Julie shared a significant part of her life with her former husband, Jim Klootwyk. Although their relationship didn’t last, she valued the years they spent together and the family they built, cherishing the life they shared during her early years.
Despite the emotional and physical challenges she faced, Julie’s kindness and humor touched everyone she met. Known for her bright smile, infectious laughter, and playful spirit, she had a gift for making people laugh and feel valued. Her best friend, John M. Heston, stood by her side, sharing countless adventures and cherished memories, providing unwavering support through thick and thin.
In her final days, Julie reflected deeply on her life. She recognized the moments she wished she had handled differently and acknowledged the regrets she carried. Yet, she faced her mortality with grace, accepting her faults and offering heartfelt apologies for her mistakes. With a profound sense of readiness, she embraced the end of her journey, vowing to watch over her loved ones with love and guidance as she joins her departed parents in heaven and dances once again.
A celebration of Julie's life will be planned for late spring, where family and friends can gather to honor her memory and the love she brought into our lives.
Julie Ann Klootwyk will be deeply missed, and while her journey had its share of struggles, her spirit taught us the importance of trying our best in the face of adversity. Though she may not have left behind a traditional legacy, the love and kindness she shared will always resonate in our hearts. Let us remember the moments we shared and honor her memory by embracing the lessons of resilience and hope that she imparted.
