A Celebration of Life service for Glenn “Dean” Sandstoe of Des
Moines will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at
Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter Township. Dean passed
away at his home on Friday, March 22, 2024. He was 87.
Born March 3, 1937 in Beaman, IA, the son of Ingwald and
Opal Sandstoe, Dean lived his childhood years in Beaman, helping
his parents operate their corn-shelling business, a full service
gas station and working on their farm.
Following graduation from Beaman high school in 1955, Dean
joined the US Navy. Upon completing basic training, he was
assigned a position in the electrical department of the aircraft
carrier USS Hornet. He served his enlistment on the carrier
, rising to the rank of Second Class Petty Officer. Dean was very
proud of his Navy career, and with a little encouragement, he
would enjoy sharing his many good memories and favorite
stories.
Following his military service, Dean enrolled in Midwestern
College located in Denison, Iowa. He later transferred to
Northeast Missouri State College to complete his education
, earning a B.S. Degree in Business Management in 1969.
Dean joined the staff of Des Moines Child and Adolescent Guidance
Center as an Administrative Manager, a position he held
for over 20 years. His responsibilities included supervising
personnel and financial operations. His work performance and
continued promotion of the Center earned him the Center’s
Support Staff Award. This work effort was widely recognized
within the service community.
Dean served several years on the financial committee of the United
Way of Central Iowa. He was a member of the CMHC Data
Committee.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Christine
Sandstoe Burton. He is survived by a brother, Gerald, of
San Diego, California, and several nieces and nephews.
